Failure on housing hurts Indigenous communitiesEmail this pageBack

The Rann Government’s failure to reach its Indigenous housing targets is bad news for remote Aboriginal communities in South Australia.

“News today that SA will lose $900,000 in funding for missing its targets means Aboriginal communities are the ones to suffer,” Shadow Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Terry Stephens said today.

“Thirty two new houses are yet to be completed across the nation with South Australia being responsible for 11 of those.

“How is it that WA receives a whopping $4 million bonus for meeting its targets under the Federal Government’s national remote Indigenous housing program whilst here in SA we fail to meet ours?

“The Federal Government has penalised SA by withdrawing funding which was to be used to fund jobs under the National Partnership Program.

“Besides the funding lost, the great tragedy is missing out on the kind of bonus that WA has received,” Mr Stephens said.

“This is serious money we’ve missed out on simply because the Rann Government has dropped the ball on this project.

“This extra funding could do so much more for building new homes in remote Indigenous areas, repairing existing homes and creating jobs.

“The Rann Government knew what the target was and, put simply, has failed.”
