Premier Rann’s own mate and former Labor Senator Chris Schacht has today given the thumbs down to Labor’s proposed Adelaide Oval redevelopment.

Shadow Minister for Sport Terry Stephens said Mr Schacht’s comments on Adelaide radio opposing Labor’s plan, support the argument that the whole idea must be scrapped.

“Even Chris Schacht, a Labor powerbroker and someone with a wealth of experience within the sporting sector is saying Rann’s plan stinks,” Mr Stephens said.

“Mr Schacht called for a brand new covered stadium and this is exactly what the State Liberals believe we need.

Mr Schact said,
‘the only way we [SA[ are going to be able to afford a 21st century stadium, that is capable of useful cricket – including one-day cricket, test cricket, Aussie Rules football, rugby, soccer, etc – is to have all of them sharing one decent stadium with a roof that seats around 50,000 – 55,000 in comfort’.

“Mr Schacht’s comments closely follow revelations the SANFL presented the Premier with an alternative proposal for a covered stadium, and that the oval’s redevelopment could encroach onto the parklands.

“Mike Rann’s stadium plan now has a real credibility problem,” Mr Stephens said.

“Yet this desperate Labor Government just threw $5 million at a project which seems increasingly unlikely to go ahead.

“We say again that this plan is a long way from happening due to the enormous hurdles it faces.

“Mr Rann must now be fuming that someone inside his own camp has publically opposed his plan.

“However, Mr Schacht is certainly wrong on one front - the State Liberals stadium plan is economical and would be able to host a wide variety of sporting events.”
