Whyalla Steel Works (Environmental Authorisation) Amendment Bill

October 15, 2015

I rise to support the bill, as I did 10 years ago. Given that I have what can only be described as a reasonably consistent and solid background, having been born and bred in Whyalla and spent 40 years there, I think I am reasonably well placed to give a bit of a commentary and talk about the feelings of most of the community that I came into contact with. I have managed to find an email which was ...Click here for full story

Matter of Interest - TRSA Awards

September 23, 2015

Recently I had the privilege of attending the annual industry awards of Thoroughbred Racing South Australia. This gala evening recognised the talent of the sport's high achievers and also inducted an outstanding racehorse into the South Australian Racing Horse Hall of Fame. I would like to acknowledge a few of the human and equine award winners of the evening. The 2014-15 Champion Racehorse of the...Click here for full story

Appropriation Bill

September 22, 2015

I rise to speak to the Appropriation Bill 2015, more commonly known as the budget that the Treasurer handed down on 18 June in another place with much fanfare and self-praise. The Treasurer talked a lot about the government's so-called tax reform, saying that it will create jobs. A tax reform cannot create jobs: business creates jobs and should be assisted in doing so by government. This is ...Click here for full story

Statutes Amendment (Decriminalisation of Sex Work) Bill

September 9, 2015

I rise today to speak to the Statutes Amendment (Decriminalisation of Sex Work) Bill. This bill is a matter of conscience for Liberal members of this place. Indeed, it has been introduced into this place by my colleague the Hon. Michelle Lensink, in tandem with the honourable member for Ashford in the other place who has attempted to pass similar legislation in the other place to no avail. I indic...Click here for full story

Correctional Services (Parole) Amendment Bill

July 30, 2015

I rise today on behalf of the opposition to speak to the Correctional Services (Parole) Amendment Bill transmitted to this place and read a first time on 18 June. I indicate that the opposition will be supporting this bill, but I do want to make a brief contribution for the benefit of the chamber. I will start with one of the more significant and controversial aspects of this bill, and that is the...Click here for full story

Criminal Law (High Risk Offenders) Bill - Final Stages

July 2, 2015

This bill passed the Legislative Council on 18 June with amendments moved by the government after negotiations with the opposition, and we are happy to support it. It has had its name changed from '(Extended Supervision Orders)' to '(High Risk Offenders)' as a result of the inclusion of a new type of order in the new process for dealing with breaches of an ESO. The Attorney-General has negotiated ...Click here for full story

Motion on the Commissioner of Police

July 1, 2015

I rise to support the motion on behalf of the Liberal Party of South Australia. I will not repeat basically what the Hon. Tung Ngo has just said about the exemplary service of the officers we are commending, but I certainly concur with everything he said. I come from a slightly different tack. I will say that I am blessed to know many serving police officers and ex-police officers. To that p...Click here for full story

Matter of Interest - Federal Budget

July 1, 2015

I rise today to add further comments to those I made back in May on the positives of the federal budget handed down earlier this year. The commonwealth Coalition government has handed down a good and wise budget, a budget that does not make massive cuts to essential services, but in fact has sustainable savings measures, one that assists families and businesses by giving tax concessions without wo...Click here for full story

Criminal Law (Extended Supervision Orders) Bill - Committee Stage

June 18, 2015

In the summary of this particular bill we have had an explanation of amendments that the government has tabled and I rise to indicate the opposition's support of these amendments. These amendments are the result of discussions between the opposition, the Parole Board and the government. I am glad that the government has listened to our concerns around the original legislation as there were several...Click here for full story

Motion on Adelaide City Skate Park

June 17, 2015

I rise on behalf of the Liberal Party to support the motion of the Hon. Tammy Franks. We have been supportive in the past and I have spoken on this particular issue in the past. I commend the motion to the house. It is an important motion, and the member for Adelaide, Rachel Sanderson, also has been doing quite a bit of agitating on this particular issue. She has had a very keen interest and...Click here for full story

Supply Bill 2015

June 4, 2015

I rise today to speak to the Supply Bill 2015. As is the convention, the opposition will be supporting this bill; however, I think it is important for us on this side to ensure that all appropriations are being spent wisely and in accordance with the measures agreed to by the parliament. This appropriation is for $3.29 billion from the Consolidated Account, a figure which seems high enough in itse...Click here for full story

Motion to Establish a Joint Committee on Jumps Racing

May 14, 2015

I move the following amendment: That the words 'whether it should be banned' be deleted from point 1. The opposition is concerned that the parameters set by the original motion are too narrow and serve only the minister's end of banning jumps racing in this state. We would prefer to see a wider discussion on the pros and cons of jumps racing from an objective standpoint, given that racing is a vit...Click here for full story

Matter of Interest - Federal Budget

May 13, 2015

I rise to comment on the budget handed down by the commonwealth government and its Treasurer last night. This budget is a sensible one. It takes a gradual path to surplus thereby ensuring that the effect on Australians is not an immediate shock. This will be welcomed by those opposite who castigated the commonwealth government for their so called 'savage cuts'. A priority of the commonwealth is th...Click here for full story

Criminal Law (Extended Supervision Orders) Bill

May 12, 2015

I rise on behalf of the opposition to speak to the Criminal Law (Extended Supervision Orders) Bill. This, of course, is a government bill, part of Labor's justice policy at the last election; it is disappointing that it has taken them well over 12 months to begin the process of implementing it. The bill provides for the creation of extended supervision orders (hereafter referred to as ESOs). ESOs ...Click here for full story

Motion of Condolence - Hon K.T. Griffin

March 24, 2015

I rise to support the motion. I thank other members for their heartfelt contributions and, in particular, the Hon. Trevor Griffin's long-term friend and colleague, the Hon. Rob Lucas. I also pass on my condolences to Val, Mark, Tim, family and friends.  I was fortunate enough to have met the Hon. Trevor Griffin on a number of occasions and I feel extremely privileged...Click here for full story
