Libs request briefing on latest prison death
Wednesday 21 September, 2011
For the second time in three months a prisoner has taken his own life at South Australia’s Yatala Labour Prison.
“The Liberal Opposition has requested a briefing from the Department for Correctional Services on this issue,” Shadow Correctional Services Minister Terry Stephens said.
“We also want to know how such tragedies continue to occur in South Australia’s prisons.
“It was my understanding the Department was to investigate the previous tragedy in June; however, I’m yet to see this report.
“I will be looking to raise this issue in the next meeting of the Select Committee into the Department for Correctional Services.
“We have too many prisoners escaping and dying while in custody on Minister Koutsantonis’ watch.
“Mr Koutsantonis must ensure the safety of our prisoners in our prisons.”
