City Beach must stay in the city
Friday 26 August, 2011
Terry Stephens, Shadow Minister for Sport, called on the Adelaide City Council and the Labor State Government to support Volleyball South Australia continuing Beach Volleyball in the city.
“In July I wrote to Mayor Yarwood to keep this unique vibrant sporting venue in the city,” said Terry Stephens.
“City Beach supports participation in sport and healthy living, and programs for the disadvantaged.
“City Beach has supported charities and not for profit groups such: as the Salvation Army; Scouting Association of SA; Big Brother Big Sister; Epic Youth; Pulse Youth; Police Rangers Youth; Hyde St Program; Multiple Church Youth Groups; Water Aid; Hudson Maher Foundation; SA Olympic Council; Canteen – youth cancer support; Lions Club; Rotary; and the APY Lands Indigenous Youth Program.
“I am concerned that the Council will not deliver a viable new option for beach volleyball to stay in the city and that the community will be left high and dry without this popular sporting facility.
“It is important that the city maintains adequate space for community sport and Minister Kenyon needs to step in to support this Adelaide sporting icon.”
